The OTEP concert at the Culture Room was dark and brooding fueled by rebellious intensity. Frontwoman Otep Shamaya is passionate, creative, aggressive and expresses herself with some of the best guttural growls in all of metal. Known for powerful lyrics with controversial messages, her songs captivated and spoke to the audience made up of mostly young women who no doubt saw her as a role model. Colorful splashes of light were not a big part of this show — but then again, that’s not what the OTEP concert experience is all about. This performance was about raw emotion, pure and unfiltered.
